Tracing the Promise Jesse Tree Devotional

One of our favorite Christmas traditions is decorating a Jesse Tree. Each day we read a story from the Old Testament that foreshadows the coming of Christ or highlights a prophecy fulfilled in him. At the end of the story we hang a little ornament on the tree that helps us remember the story of that day. By the end of Advent, we can point to each ornament on the tree in turn to trace the promises of God from creation up to the incarnation.

What is the Jesse Tree?

If the name Jesse Tree is unfamiliar to you, it originates in the Old Testament prophecy of Isaiah 11:1.

There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.

Through stories of Jesus's genealogy, baptism, Scripture readings, and more, the Gospels make it clear that he is the shoot from the stump of Jesse and God's anointed Messiah. The purpose of the Jesse Tree is to make sure our children learn more about the promises of God in the Old Testament that point forward to the person and work of Jesus Christ.

What's in this devotional?

I'm always eager to recommend resources to friends and family attempting to establish their own faith traditions, but I couldn't find many resources for families to use to incorporate the Jesse Trees into their own Advent activities. This devotional is my labor of love, highlighting a different promise or prophecy every day. With each devotion I include discussion questions and other suggested readings and songs you can use for your own personal devotion or children of all ages. I even include recommendations in the introduction for how to use the devotional with children of varying ages based on my experience as a teacher of little ones.
